About the Original Artwork
When Time was New is inspired by the traveller’s folktale ‘Hare Here on Earth’; a tale about a Hare who was the daughter of the Sun and Moon. As she leapt across the heavens a star appeared wherever she rested her paws. Hare looked down upon Earth and fell in love, much to her parent’s disapproval. Going against the wishes of her parents Hare decided to leave the heavens and descend to Earth. This is said to be the reason why Hares keep their young close to the earth’s surface instead of within burrows. Hares are often associated with shape-shifting and witches therefore the rowan branches are symbolic of protection against such forces. The piece is dyed with natural dyes derived from indigo and oak. The gold moon is adorned with 23 carat gold. The Hares are hand-carved from lino and printed onto silk. Hand and machine embroidery adds texture, depth and movement to the work.
